Case Studies

Real housing problems. Practical advocacy. Meaningful outcomes.

These case studies show how independent tenant advocacy can help when housing problems are not being resolved through the usual channels.

REGENERATION & HOUSING CONDITIONS

When Poor Housing Conditions Put a Tenant’s Health at Risk

The situation

A tenant remained living in a block awaiting demolition as part of a regeneration programme while their new home was being prepared.

As other residents moved out and the condition of the block deteriorated, they began experiencing serious problems within the property, including an insect infestation and damp. Despite repeatedly reporting the problems, repairs were not being adequately addressed because the building was due to be demolished.

The situation became particularly concerning because the tenant had recently undergone a major medical procedure and had other health needs. The conditions within the property presented an increased risk to their recovery and wellbeing.

Our intervention

After the tenant had repeatedly tried to resolve the problems through the usual channels, we intervened on their behalf.

We wrote directly to the council setting out the unresolved housing conditions, the tenant’s health circumstances and the potential risks of remaining in the property. We highlighted the urgency of the situation and asked the council to take appropriate action rather than allowing the problems to continue simply because the block was awaiting demolition.

The outcome

Following our intervention, the council took immediate action. The tenant was moved into a fully furnished new-build property, providing them with safe and suitable temporary accommodation while their permanent new home was being completed.

They remained there for approximately one month before moving into their new property.

From repeated delays to immediate action — advocacy helped ensure the tenant’s health and housing needs were taken seriously.
